OUR
HISTORY
"For
the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations."
Psalm 100:5
The
colorful history of our church began in 1812 when the Reverend William
Maffit began holding occasional religious services here. It was first
known as the "Church at Barrett's Crossroads." From this modest
beginning -- and with the help of Commodore Thomas ap Catesby Jones --
the Lewinsville Presbyterian Church was officially organized on October
17, 1846, with 17 members. A small frame building was constructed at the
crossroads of the village that became known as Lewinsville.
During
the Civil War, the church property was occupied by Union troops who also
used the church itself as a stable for their horses.
After
the war, the building was restored and remained in use until 1955 when
the present sanctuary building was erected. The education building--Heritage
Hall-- was constructed in 1960, replacing a smaller facility which was
no longer big enough to house the Christian education classes of our growing
congregation. A new narthex, entrance, music facility, and administrative
wing were completed in 1990.
For
nearly 160 years, our congregation has borne witness to the good news
in Jesus Christ at the crossroads at Lewinsville. Now with a membership
of over 800, we continue to grow in faith. We warmly welcome visitors
and those seeking a new church home.

of the church.
